SOUTHERNS IN NORTH CAROLINA IN THE 1860 FEDERAL CENSUS:
STOKES, FORSYTH, ROCKINGHAM, AND DAVIDSON COUNTIES

1860 finds about 110 persons named Southern living in North Carolina.   Only two of the grandchildren of William and Magdalen are still living, both sons of Reuben I. They are Stephen and Reuben II.

The birthplace of all persons is North Carolina unless otherwise stated in the "Notes" column.

Southern
Martha
F
40

This Martha Southern, apparently a helper in the household of Dr. W.W. Cole,  is not clearly identified. She may be Martha, unmarried daughter of Stephen and Rachel Southern in the 1850 census, but Martha's age is given as 37 that year, so we would expect 47 this year.  This year Stephen (with second wife Harriet Chaffin, married 1854) appears in the census twice, once in Stokes and once in Forsyth. The two enumerations show significant age differences for the same family members who are listed twice. So the ages in this census are sometimes suspect.  Martha's being so close to Stephen's new household (below) suggests that she is indeed Stephen's unmarried daughter Martha.

Stephen, son of Reuben I, with his second family. Stephen's first wife Rachel died in the early 1850s, and he married Harriet Chaffin in early 1854. Harriet was less than half Stephen's age. The household appears a second time in this census, in Forsyth County, with an additional family member -- a baby girl named Jane (See Forsyth County below).  It appears the family moved across the county line during the census year and was counted a second time in Forsyth. Daughter Martha is shown as 10 here, but age 13 in Forsyth. Whichever is more likely correct, she was born well before Stephen and Harriet's marriage in 1854. She is most likely a child of Harriet by a previous marriage, since Stephen had a daughter named Martha by his first wife Rachel, who is likely the Martha Southern, age 40, in the nearby household of Dr. W.W. Cole. Like many 3rd and 4th generation Southerns, Stephen ended up landless and poor.  In contrast, the sons of Stephen's late brother Joshua were relatively affluent.

The "Lucy" Southern here is actually "Laney" (Delana) Westmoreland Southern with her daughters Rachel and Charity (also called "Chissie").  Delana was the daughter of William and Charity (Morris) Westmoreland and the widow of the Reuben Southern who was murdered by Reuben Samuel in 1854 (See the Murder of Reuben Southern).  After her husband's death, Delana returned to the household of her widowed mother and four younger siblings. Three years after this census was taken, Delana married William Westley (or Wesley) Petree. (Marriage bond 11/24/1863, Delania Southern and Wm. W. Petree.)

Silas Westmoreland was a cousin of chair maker David S. Westmoreland and David's sister Delana Westmoreland Southern, and thus a nephew to Charity Westmoreland living nearby this year. John Southern in this household was apparently assisting on the farm. John appears to have been the son of William and Melinda Marshall Southern, and a grandson of Stephen and Rachel Southern. John appears as John F. Southern, age 11, in William and Melinda's household of 1850.  John's presence in a Westmoreland household is another example of the close associations of the children and grandchildren of Stephen and Rachel Southern with the Westmoreland family in this period.

Alexander and Bettie appear in SE Stokes in the 1850 and 1860 census, and are in Surry County in 1870. His parentage is not known for certain, though he may have been a son of William (III) and Frances (Fanny) Banks Southern. The couple is most surely the Alexander Southern and Elizabeth Tumlin in the Stokes marriage bond dated 1/17/1848. The 1850 census shows them with a one year-old boy named William not seen here. William is surely the W.H. Southern buried at Bethesda Methodist Church, born 12/24/1848 died 5/11/1858. Buried near young William is J.H. Southern, born 5/15/1851, died 5/12/1858,  another child of this couple who died with his brother from a shared disease or accident. Having been born and died during the decade of the 1850s, J.H. would not have appeared in either census.

This Patsey, sadly in the county poorhouse, may be the Patsey seen in 1830 as a single head of household, then aged 40-49, with a boy under five living with her.  Whether she had been married to a Southern, or born Southern and never married, is not yet certain. In 1815 Daniel Southern, a son of Reuben I, married Patsey Mitchell, and the couple appears in the Stokes 1820 census. Daniel appears to have moved to Greene County, Indiana, by 1830. Whether wife Patsey went with him or stayed being in N.C. is not clear. A Patsey Southern was a principal in a bastardy bond brought against a Mr. Gentry in ___, and that Patsey gave birth to a son out of wedlock.  This may be that Patsey.

In view of the 1850 census, Malory appears to be the son of Reuben II and Dosia, seen below. Malory appears to be a widower here; he had married Theny Jane Bennett in Stokes 5/27/1851. He married Sarah E. Grogan 5/23/1867. As seen in the 1880 census, Amanda would marry Thomas Collins. Unmarried Eliza is in the household of the Collins couple in the 1880 census.

This is probably the William Southern and Mary Terrell who married in Stokes 12/23/1854. William was born about 1836, but his parents have not been conclusively identified. He is possibly William B. of the 1850 census, then 13, son of a Reuben born 1804. That Reuben is believed to have been a son of Ford Southern.  This William is better off financially than most Southerns in N.C., owning real property and with a personal value greater than most of the others.

This is the same family as Stokes #106 in this census, but with significant differences in reported ages. In Stokes this year, Stephen is shown as 71, Harriet as 33, and Martha as 10.  Baby Jane isn't shown in Stokes. Martha is likely a daughter of Harriet by a previous marriage, born well before Harriet's marriage to Stephen in 1854. Stephen's household with first wife Rachel had an older daughter named Martha.

William is a son of Stephen and Stephen's first wife Rachel (Stephen appears twice in this census with second wife Harriet, in both Stokes and Forsyth). "Verlinda" is Malinda Marshall, whom William married in November 1837. Son "Yancy" in this this census appears to be the same as "Martin W." in the family's 1850 census.  William's sister Nancy is nearby this year, working in the household of Harden Haizlip (below).

Nancy Southern, here assisting with young children in the affluent Haizlip household in Forsyth, is likely the youngest daughter of Stephen and Rachel Southern, though she is probably closer to 30 this year.  Her sister Julina was married to David Westmoreland and living in Davidson County in this census (below). After Julina's death in 1863, Nancy married her former brother-in-law David Westmoreland in 1865 and lived in Davidson County.

James Osborne Southern, often known as "Osborne," was the youngest son of William and Frances "Fanny" Banks Southern, and brother to Thomas Simpson Southern Sr. (called Simpson), John H. Southern, William F. Southern, Lucy Jane Southern Flynn, and Eliza Southern Steele. According to Findagrave, Osborne's wife Elizabeth was Elizabeth Pauline Simpson, sometimes seen as "Lina." Osborne's brother John H. and his family are in Kentucky this year, in the household of their sister Eliza Steele, wife of Andrew Steele, though in time both of those families would return to N.C.  The elusive brother Thomas Simpson is not seen in this census. Sister Lucy Jane Southern Flynn and husband Jonathan are also in Rockingham this year, as is the widow of brother William F., Charlotte Southern (see below).

Lucy J. Flynn (or Flinn) was Lucy Jane Southern, sister of James Osborne Southern (above),  Thomas Simpson Southern (called "Simpson"), John H. Southern, and William F. Southern (see Charlotte Southern below).  William P. Southern in this household is a son of Simpson, seen age 12 in Simpson's 1850 census, and thus Lucy's nephew. The younger Richard is likely also a younger son of Simpson. Simpson's whereabouts this year are not known.

Charlotte Southern was born Charlotte Robertson. Her first husband was David Lybass (m. 1853). David Lybass died by 1858; Charlotte married William F. Southern in December of that year. William F. was a son of William and Frances Banks Southern. It appears he died within a year of the marriage. In this census Charlotte is a widow with an infant son William (seen as John W. or John William elsewhere). Charlotte is here living next door to her late husband's sister, Lucy Jane Southern Flynn. Charlotte died tragically in November 1904 in Salem, NC, when the Salem water reservoir burst and flooded the surrounding neighborhood. Her grandson Joe Henry Southern also died in the event.

Some time after 1850, chair maker David S. Westmoreland, formerly of Stokes and Forsyth County, moved his family to Davidson County, where he became a pioneer in the nascent furniture industry in Thomasville. His first wife was Julina Southern, daughter of Stephen and Rachel Southern of Stokes and Forsyth. After Julina's death in 1863, David married Julina's younger sister Nancy in 1865. Sally Southern, the "domestic" in the Westmoreland household this year, was an unmarried older sister of Julina and Nancy. In this census, Nancy is seen as a domestic in the Forsyth household of Harden Haizlip (above).
