SOUTHERNS IN NORTH CAROLINA IN THE 1830 FEDERAL CENSUS:
STOKES COUNTY, N.C.
(No Rockingham County entries this year)

1830 finds two sons of the original family in NC, William II and Reuben Sr., still living in their 70s.  Their brother Ford is not present this year. He sold his land on Blackeys Branch in the early 1823 and disappeared from the record until 1839, when he signed an affidavit on behalf of a relative's pension application.  He may have been living in the household of a son-in-law, or even out of state.  Two of Reuben Sr.'s sons, Joshua and Reuben Jr., and two of Ford's sons, William(III) and Reuben (III) have households this year.  Reuben Sr.'s son Daniel, seen in 1820, has moved to Greene County, Indiana by this year.  The household of Reuben Sr.'s son Stephen appears to be included within Reuben Sr.'s household.

William II is 71 or 72 this year, so he should be marked one column to the right, but there is no doubt this is him. By this time he is a widower.  The three slaves here are likely the same three seen in 1810 and 1820, with the young men now in their early 20s. William lived at least until the time of the 1834 tax list. So far we have no idea what became of the slaves after his death. William had no sons. The slaves may have gone to the household of a daughter of William, but we do not know his daughters' names or whom they may have married.

Old Reuben Sr. is in his 70s, and a widower.  The other two adults and seven children suggest a younger household is living with him.  This is most likely his son Stephen, who was a separate householder in 1820 but not seen apart this year. Of his other sons, Reuben Jr. and Joshua again have separate households this year.  Son Daniel in the 1820 count is apparently the Daniel Southern seen this year in Greene County, Indiana near his aunt Judith Southern Burch and her husband John, who left NC in 1819.

The census taker marked Reuben Jr. with "II", to distinguish him from his father. He and wife Dosia appear to have been late starters, with three children under 10. One of the boys is Malory.

Patsey is a mystery -- a woman over 40 with a child under 5. In 1815 Reuben Sr.'s son Daniel married Patsey Mitchell, and in 1820 they had their own household in Stokes County.  This year Daniel is in Greene County, Indiana with a growing household (at least we think it is the same Daniel -- they live near Daniel's aunt Judith Southern Burch).  Did the couple separate or divorce, and Daniel take a second wife in Indiana?  Or is this a different Patsey, perhaps born Southern and never married? Either way, is the child her child, out of wedlock? In 1860 a Patsy Southern, age 75, is in the county poor house.  Seems to be a sad story here.

Reuben III is chronologically the third Reuben Southern in the state (more would come later); this must be Ford's son, and named for his uncle.  The younger man 15-19 appears too old to be a son in this young household.

William III, born 1797, is a son of Ford and chronologically the third William Southern in the state, here with wife Fanny Banks Southern. The oldest son is Thomas Simpson; the younger two are John H. and William F.  A fourth son, James Osborne, was born after 1830.  Two of the daughters are Jane and Elizabeth.
