At this enumeration, four of the sons/probable sons of the late William (I) are still living in Stokes County. Probable son Boaz sold his land on Town Fork Creek in 1807 and left the state for good; he appears this year in Warren County, Kentucky. Two new Southern households appear this year: Joshua and Stephen, the two oldest sons of Reuben.

William II, probable son of William (I), now 51 or 52, with an unidentified wife 26-44, a daughter 10-15, and three slaves. This census does not distinguish the ages or sex of slaves, but the 1820 census shows a female slave 26-44 and two male slaves under 14. Thus it is likely that one of the slaves this year is the woman seen in 1820, with two very young sons this year. William II was the only Southern in N.C. ever to own slaves.

Ford 1 2 - 1 - 3 - - 1 - -

Ford, son of William (I) and Magdalen, now forty-five, with wife since 1795, Catherine Zimmerman, and their family of eight. At this point they are living on Blackeys Branch, Ford having sold his part of the Hewins Creek homeplace in 1803 to John Burch. One of the daughters is Nancy, who married John Mitchell in 1825. One of the sons 10-15 must be William, born 1797, who would marry Fanny Banks in 1815.  Another son is believed to be Reuben.  Overton Southern is also thought to have been a son of Ford and Catherine. His 1850 cenus (in Indiana) shows he was born about 1803, and could be one of the boys this year.

Reubin 1 - 2 - 1- 1 2 2 - 1 -

Reuben, son of William (I), now in his 50s, wife's name not known though other researchers have suggested she was Polly Davis, and he may have been married more than once. The youngest children could belong to a son with wife shown in the 16-26 group in both sexes, possibly Reuben Jr. or Daniel. Reuben's older sons Joshua and Stephen are seen for the first time with their own households this year.

John - - - 1 - 4 - 1 - - -

John, son of William (I) and Magdalen, now about 35, married Elizabeth Duncan about 1804 (no marriage bond in N.C.). She was born 1791 and in her early teens when married. They wasted no time; four daughters (the first of 15 children) came very quickly. Judith married John Burch in 1804 and is now elsewhere; Magdalen may have died before 1810, but also need to check the John Burch household. John is still on Hewins Creek, but he and Elizabeth sold the land inherited from William (I) in 1817, and he is surely the John in Giles County, Va. in the 1820 census with ten children, four of them daughters over 10 but under 16. Joshua, son of Reubin, just starting out next to his father, having married Mary Carter the previous year; no children yet. Later censuses give conflicting information about his age, but he is probably about 30 here, and perhaps even 36.

Stephen - - 1 - - 1 - 1 - - -

Stephen is Reuben's son, starting out in his early twenties with a wife, probably Rachel, and a young daughter. Reuben sold "his son" Stephen 150 acres of his Hewins Creek lands this year.
